New Zealand

New Zealand has sent a team to every Commonwealth Games since the first in 1930, one of only six teams to have done so (the others are Australia, Canada, England, Scotland, and Wales). At the first games held in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and then called the British Empire Games, there were eleven teams. The Commonwealth Games are held every four years, in between the Olympic Games.

In 1911, the Festival of the Empire held in London to celebrate the coronation of King George V included an Inter-Empire Championships was held in which teams from Australasia, Canada, South Africa and the United Kingdom competed in events such as boxing, wrestling, swimming and athletics. There were three athletes from New Zealand (G. Hoskins, R. Opie and W. A. Woodger) see and swimmer Malcolm Champion.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee (before 1994, The New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association) is the body in New Zealand responsible for selecting Athletes to represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games. The NZOC is a member of the Commonwealth Games Federation.

After the 2006 Commonwealth Games, New Zealand had an overall total of 529 medals (124 Gold, 168 Silver and 237 Bronze); see table total below. New Zealand was fourth after Australia, England and Canada, and generally is fourth or fifth (usually competing with South Africa for the fourth position); see All-time tally.
