</div> <p>India, which is trying to retain the second place in the XIXth Commonwealth Games, had a good start on Thursday with Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa winning the 37th gold for the country in women&#8217;s badminton doubles final.</p>
<p>The Indian won the first ever gold medal in the women&#8217;s doubles badminton event for India in Commonwealth Games history defeating their Singaporean opponents in straight sets 21-16, 21-19.

<p>Australian Michael Shelley, who caught Kenyan Amos Tirop Matui with around a mile to go, claimed silver 53 seconds adrift.</p>

<p>The come-from-behind victory followed on from Singapore women&#8217;s team&#8217;s success in the gold medal match on Friday.</p>
<p>England made a fine start when 17-year-old Liam Pitchford came back from two sets down to beat Singapore&#8217;s No. 1 Gao Ning (SIN) 4-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-9, 13-11.</p>
<p>With the the pressure on the top seeds Zi Yang rose to the challenge to level the tie by beating Paul Drinkhall 9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-1.</p>
<p>The tie swung in Singapore&#8217;s favour when Ma Liang beat veteran Andrew Baggeley 8-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-6.</p>
<p>Gao then sparked celebrations among the small Singapore contingent in the crowd when he secured the title with a 9-11, 11-9, 11-1, 11-7 victory over Drinkhall

<p>Sania Mirza would be playing the women’s single final against an Australian player. At the same time, Somdev Devvarman would be playing his final match against another Australian in the Men’s Single.</p>

</div> <p>Rifle shooting ace Gagan Narang picked up his third gold medal, and second individual, in the Commonwealth Games while the women&#8217;s archery team grabbed their first as India widened the lead over England in the race for the second spot on Friday. Narang, who had won the men&#8217;s 10m air rifle pairs and individual gold medals going into Friday&#8217;s competition, added the pairs 50m rifle 3-position gold to his kitty with Imran Hasan Khan, with a Games record to add to the feat.</p>
<p>It was the country&#8217;s 16th gold after women archers Deepika Kumari, Dola Banerjee and Bombayala Devi Laishram fetched India their 15th title and more medals were primed to be plucked by the Indians during the day.</p>
<p>India&#8217;s highest gold medal tally, 30, was in Manchester in 2002 while four years later at Melbourne the country&#8217;s athletes scooped up 22.</p>

<p>India women&#8217;s team won the gold in archery recurve event. India grabbed the yellow metal in a nail biting final against England. Indian team scored 207 points against England&#8217;s 206.</p>
<p>With this win India narrowed its gap against Australia who leads in medal tally with 33 gold, 19 silver and 18 bronze. India has 15 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze.

<p>Indian pairs of Gurpreet Singh-Omkar Singh and Vijay Kumar-Gurpreet Singh clinched two gold medals on Thursday, taking India&#8217;s gold medal tally in the Commonwealth Games to 13.</p>
<p>Ronjan Sodhi won silver in the individual double trap event.</p>
<p>Wrestler Geeta won the 14th gold for India in the 55 kg freestyle category.</p>
<p>Earlier, Vijay Kumar and Gurpreet Singh won the 25m rapid fire pistol pairs event while Gurpreet Singh and Omkar Singh 10m air pistol event in the Day 4 of the competition.</p>
<p>Kumar and Gurpreet together fired 1162 to bag the top prize, ahead of Malaysia&#8217;s Amir Hasan Hasli Izwan and Adzha Hafiz (1142) and Australian bronze medal winning duo of Bruce Quick and David Chapman (1125) at Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range here.</p>
<p>Kumar shot 294 in stage 1 and 293 in stage 2, while Gurpreet fired 282 in the first and 293 in the second stage.</p>
<p>But world champion Tejaswini Sawant and Lajja Gausami fell by the wayside in the 50m rifle 3 position singles on Day 4 of the competition.</p>
<p>In women&#8217;s 50m rifle 3 position, Gausami finished a lowly sixth after Tejaswini failed to qualify for the finals.

<p>At the same time, another Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna was crashed out of the Men’s Singles competition yesterday. Bopanna lost 2-6, 6-7 in the second round against Australian Peter Luczak.</p>
<p>Somdev will now take on the winner of the match between Scotland’s Colin Fleming and Rubin Statham of New Zealand.</p>
<p>Sania Mirza defeated Cook Island’s Brittany Teei 6-0,6-2 in a Women’s Singles second round match.

<p>Earlier, India started the day with a bronze medal when the women&#8217;s team of of Bhagyabati Chanu, Jhano Handah and Gagandeep Kaur compound archery team beat Malaysia.</p>
<p>Later in the day, Indian athletes will vie for a lot of medals at the Delhi Games where women&#8217;s wrestling makes its debut with events in 48 kg, 55 kg, 63 kg and 72 kg freestyle and Greco-Roman styles.</p>
<p>After having scooped up a bagful of medals, including several golds, the Indian shooters are all set to boost the country&#8217;s medals kitty further.
